@ 2 months

Today marked the exact 2 months since lil b arrives into this world. Looking back, the last two months were such whirlwind experience filled with so many unexpected memories of both ups and downs. I swear I had never been through a more stressful and challenging two months in my entire 30 plus years of life.

Where shall I even begin? Mmm….

Lil b was not born perfectly healthy. Shortly after making his appearance on the morning of 22nd Jan, he was wheeled to the observation room for tests and chest X-ray. Reason, lil b had let out an unusual cry caused by possible obstructed airway. In short, he wasn’t breathing properly as a normal newborn should. To me, I couldn’t tell the difference and it didn’t occur to me anything serious would befall on lil b. Maybe because everybody were acting strangely calm throughout the entire procedure.

The midwives made a few more attempts to suction out possible remaining secretion from lil b’s airway, both mouth and nose that may have caused the obstruction. Half way through, lil b’s cries were back to normal. Everybody were sure relieved, including my obgyn who was busy stitching me up. Just when we thought the worst is over, things took another turn. After a few normal cries, lil b was seen gasping for air again. After giving me a short brief and assuring me everything’s in good hands, the midwives were out of my sight in minutes together with my newborn.

I swear I was so heavily sedated from the epidural that I wasn’t sure how to react. I thought I heard one of the midwives said something like ‘phlegm, phlegm..’ earlier so I assumed lil b was nothing more than just being a phlegmy baby.

After lil b was wheeled away, reality began to strike. My mood sunk, and I began to worry. Hubby was with me throughout the whole experience but that doesn’t make the situation any better. Can tell he was in a state of shock himself. Thankfully, the midwives were helpful by providing me updates from time to time.

We stayed in the labour room for the next hour or so while the ward room was being cleaned. It was an agonising wait. I asked hubs to go check out lil b’s progress.

Hubs came back awhile later and brought along some good news. He had met with the paed. While it was not possible to determine the reason for the obstructed airway, the good news is lil b’s airway seemed to have clear miraculously; all without any aid. Miracle? We don’t know.  According to the paed, he was in the midst of preparing the tube (meant for insertion into the mouth to clear the airway) when lil b showed sudden remarkable breathing improvement; with 100% optimum oxygen intake. “maybe he knew if he doesn’t breath properly in the next minute or so, misery was gonna befall on him *smile*”

The X ray results came out the next morning.  There were some possible infections spotted on the lungs and to be on a safe side the paed decided to put lil b was put on a course of antibiotics for 7 days; all that despite lil b showing no sign of illness anymore. I was a little skeptical about the whole antibiotics thing but I guess we just have to trust the experts.

Lil b spent the first 4 days in NICU and remaining 3 days in nursery. On the 3rd day of his life, he developed jaundice (apparently baby with blood group A/B born to blood group O mommy has the tendency to develop severe jaundice. Lil b falls under such category). No risk were taken, he was put under the light.

The cause of infection was unknown but the highest possibility was suspected to be the meconium that lil b may have swallowed at birth (a slightly lower amniotic fluid was detected during my last check up). There were many other possibilities that may cause an infection on newborn and there is no way to be 100% sure. Although I was very curious to find out the root cause, I told the doctors what I cared most then was for them to treat, rather than to dwell on assumptions. It was quite a depressing sight seeing all the healthy babies in nursery and my kesian lil b segegrated in another crib under the UV light with hand bandaged for the IV line (antibiotics). All I wished for was really to bring home my baby soonest possible.

I stayed in the hospital for 2 nights. On the 3rd day, my hectic routine started. I travelled 50km a day to the hospital; to see lil b, to hug him, to talk to him, to cuddle, to nurse and importantly to care and shower him with all the love from home. He may not be able to communicate, but I just know he knew mommy was there to protect him….

On the 7th day, we were finally able to bring lil b home. We went to the hospital early that Friday 29th morning. I was very excited that the night before seemed to crawl. We headed straight to the nursery but lil b was not yet ready. So we went to my obgyn’s office for my checkup and then to the paed’s clinic for final briefing before discharge.

We waited impatiently for the nurses at the nursery to get lil b ready; the discharge package, the forms, the immunisation card etc. At around 12.30pm, lil b was all geared for home sweet home. All forms signed and goodbye waved. My lil b was finally in my arms heading a place we all call HOME.

…. more to come

Darren’s Birth Story

@ 2 weeks 5 days

I went to see Dr Jimmy on 21st Jan at 8.30am. I was all prepared for Dr to tell me to admit on the same day so I actually packed along my labour bag to the hospital. MIL was equally anxious that she took a half day and accompanied me to see Dr. Hubby on the other hand was on ever ready standby mode.

It turned out, I was only 3cm dilated and had no other labour symptoms. However due to a slightly lower amniotic fluid Dr booked me in for induction the next morning at 6.30am. Afterall, I was only 3 days away from my estimated due date so there was really no reason to delay.

That remaining Thursday was uneventful. Spent the whole day playing with Ryan (figured I was going to miss him dearly during my stay in hospital). I checked my labour bag to ensure everything’s all packed especially my camera and laptop.

I called it a night around 1am after watching my TVB series A Chip Off the Old Block. The drama came about an hour later. I woke up having distinctive pain at the lower abdomen. It was menstrual kind of pain. The attack came at irregular intervals (sometimes 5 mins, sometimes 15mins). Since the pain I felt was somehow bearable, I wasn’t in a state of bothersome nor being too panicked yet. I even tried to go back to sleep as I vaguely remembered the pain I endured during Ryan’s labour was much more intense.

Hubby and Ryan were soundly asleep. I continued to lie down on the bed contemplating if I should wake hubby up or wait until the alarm sets off at 5.30am for my scheduled admission. I procrastinated for another hour or so. At 3.30am when I went to the washroom to relieve myself, what greeted me was a bloody show.  Well, so this is for REAL now. No more dilly dally. No more procrastination.

I woke hubby up. The sleepy blur cat thought it was 5.30am and just nodded his head when I told him we need to go hospital now. It was only after I told him I was bleeding he jumped out of bed. He dashed to MIL to break the news and for her to help look after Ryan who was still sweetly asleep. I gave him a goodbye kiss before we left for the hospital.

Hubby dropped me off at the main entrance while he went to park his car. I’ve already done my pre admission so everything was pretty straight forward. The labour department was eerily quiet with only 3 nurses on duty. I was guided to labour room 5. After I got changed into the hospital gown, I lay down on bed looking directly at the clock. It was 5am. The midwife checked and I was 5cm dilated. I quickly told her I wanted epidural but she was hesitant. She tried to convince me I could go through labour without epidural since I could still chit chat with her even at 5cm dilation. She asked me to think about it while she performed the enema procedure. I swear I was almost swayed by her persuasion. I took a glance at hubby for ‘signal’. He gave me the look **don’t ever try to be a ‘hero’**. Immediately I knew what I had to do and so I took his ‘signal’. A short while after the enema procedure, I gave her my final decision. A YES, I need EPIDURAL.

Half an hour later, the anesthetist, Dr Sentiago arrived. I was asked to lay on my left side during the whole procedure. The 15 mins or so procedure was torturing. I was in extreme agony. The pain from the poking needle was 1000x more intense than my contractions.

Shortly after the epidural was administered, I was all numb from waist down. I didn’t feel the slightest pain. I was in such relief that I actually fell asleep while waiting contractions to intensified. At 7.30am, my obgyn finally made an appearance. I was still 5cm dilated. That was when he suggested I go for induction. I agreed without hesitation.

At about 10am or so I was finally 9cm dilated. A second midwife (Ms Tan) came and taught me how to push. My legs were all numb by now but I could still feel a bit of contractions. The first few tries of pushes went down the drain. I just couldn’t do it correctly. After a few more ‘lessons’ from her, I finally did it right. At about 11.10am, I was all ready and the nurse called my obgyn. While waiting for my obgyn, the midwife asked hubby if he wanted to see the baby’s head. When I heard that, a chill went down my spine and I quickly protested. Ms Tan took a glance at hubby who actually nodded. *Faint*. The midwife pointed to hubby and said ‘There, can see? Can see the baby’s head?’ I was surely embarassed *paiseh la* but after they were done with the ‘viewing’, my curiousity took over. I actually had the cheek to ask hubby ‘Does baby has a lot of hair’? LOL.

Obgyn took forever to come. To kill time, the three of us (hubby, Ms Tan and myself) tried predicting the baby’s birth time. We were impressed with the effect of epidural. At 10cm dilated, minutes before labour, I could still joke and laugh. Money well spent.

Anyway, Dr Jimmy came a short while later and after a few successful pushes, lil Darren came into the world. The midwife put lil Darren on my chest. I couldn’t be happier. With a sense of relief, I shed a bit of happiness tears. He weighted 3.41kg and 51cm long. Slightly bigger than his kor kor. Welcome to the world Darren (aka my precious lil b).

The look after a hearty ‘meal’ :D
