Lil b @ 2 months

@ 2 months 4 weeks 1 day

Little b’s milestones. This is like 4 weeks late.

We brought lil b for his vaccines on the 10 April. These were what was recorded:

Length: 63cm

Weight: 6.3kg

HC: 42cm

We were advised to feed lil b 2mls of Upthamol an hour before the scheduled vaccines – Rotateg (oral) and 6 in 1 1st dose (jab) for fear he may feel discomfort shortly after the jab. True enough, lil b developed a mild fever in the late afternoon so I fed him another dose of 2.5ml (now that he’s bigger) Upthamol. Besides spotting a fever, he was all his cheery self. No worries.

What we observed over the last 2 months +…

- still being breastfed and on formula (4oz).

- lil b is able to lift head up briefly when on tummy. However,  just like his kor kor, lil b dislikes tummy time. He would fuss each time I lay him on his tummy.

- he started drooling when he was about a month plus. These few weeks he started blowing bubbles. At times, he blew so much bubbles until he chokes on his own saliva.

- startles easily especially in the afternoon. That is why he is such a light sleeper. Eventhough I use a beanie on him, it doesn’t seem to help much. It’s just like walking on egg shells.

- he’s able to follow object when we pass the item across his face.

- he’s able to turn his head both sides.

- I like to believe he’s able to recognise and love the sound of me because each time I was nearby, he would readily attempt to turn and look at me.

- able to smile back when we make stupid funny faces or smile at him.

- coos a lot.

- able to respond by cooing when we talk to him. He can be really loud at that too.

- enjoys the cot mobile a lot (unlike his kor kor who never appreciated them).

- likes to stare at kor kor.

- likes to kick and moves his hands alot. It’s as if he never stops moving when he’s awake.

- last feed around 11pm, then 1am, 4am, 7am.  On lucky days, he’ll doze off around  9pm and wake up around 1am for his feeds, then 5am and 8am.

- doesn’t really have a fixed nap schedule yet. Usually he’ll go back to zzz-land after his 7am feed until about 11am. He’ll take another short nap in the afternoon around 3pm followed by 6pm nap. Really have work on a more preditable routine so I could gain more sanity.

- he’s starting to enjoy massage time

- He used to cry during sponging before bed time. The crying was particularly bad during his first – second month but that gradually faded away. I guess now he’s more aware and feel more secure of his surroundings.  When he’s hungry or sleepy he’ll move his hands and arms, coos a lot for attention. Only when we ignore him for like 15 - 30 minutes, he’ll cry. That’s how I get my extra beauty sleep in the morning. When he’s sleepy, he’ll cry with his eyes shut.

Overall, lil b is a very cheery baby. Just like his kor kor, he seldom cry. I’m not even sure if I had heard him scream for attention. But on occasion when he does cry, he would purse his lips and his cries are usually accompanied by a lot of tears rolling down the otherwise cheeky cheeks.

Happy 2 months.

Daddy said lil b looked scared in the pic. Actually I believed he was kinda annoyed being jiggled around by kor kor who was evidently enjoying the opportunity to torture the lil bro. :P

The first two months

@ 2 months 1 day

Everyone couldn’t be more happier now that the worse seemed to over. Lil b is finally home and everyone gets a mission to adjust and adapt a lifestyle with a newborn at home. We all have to learn to speak softly, play moderately, the interupted meals, the baby’s cries, etc.

After what lil b had been thru is his first 7 days of life, we were sure protective. It was mostly Ryan whom we had to control and manage.

Ryan loves his lil b to bits. He would get teary eyed when the CL carried lil b away for naps/sleep. He’s such a loving kor kor; with only the occassional over the board affections which he’s still learning to adjust.  We are extremely grateful for that despite us being protective over lil b, Ryan showed no signs of jealousy. When we sounded him for patting the lil b too hard on the head, he would oblige and slow down. When we ticked him off for being too loud when lil b was sleeping, most of the time he would lower his volume. There were occasions when he would just slip into a rebel, irritating everyone and breaking all the forbidden rules. There was a time when I was tucking him in bed at night when he said to me ‘Mom, having a baby is not so fun’. I chuckled at his statement. I guess reality finally striked him and he finally realises he’s no longer the king of the house.

A week after lil b was discharged, we brought him back to the paed for check up. Iwas pleased to know the trauma lil b experienced the week before, he gained some really good weight (3.9kg @ 2 weeks; +0.5kg in a week).

The 1st month

It’s always not easy to pick a name, not to mention a good name. Traditionally MIL would give us a few options after seeking some advise from sifu. The names that were initially given for us to choose were so so.. and I really mean, just so so. So MIL went back to the sifu and was given another variation. After pondering with the limited options available, we finally decided on one. Likewise with Ryan’s name, mommy came up with the spelling. I’m so proud of myself. Imagine they have to live with that name the rest of their life. What an accomplishment. So on the 7th Feb we finally register lil b’s name with the Jabatan Pendaftaran negara at Maju Junction.

Full Moon

We had the full moon ceremony on the 11th Feb. It was just a simple ceremony. Daddy was at work and it was just the grandparents, kor kor, me and the CL. Customary it’s a tradition to trim a bit of the newborn’s hair. I remember daddy was the one who did it for Ryan 4 years ago. This time round, mommy was given the honour.

After prayers and a short walk outside the house (part of the tradition), everybody got back to our normal routine. We should have had it the day before when daddy was around. Somehow without daddy around, I felt the ceremony kinda incomplete.

After CL left on the 12 Feb (she had requested to go earlier for CNY) I took over the full mommy role. Lil b was barely a month old. It’s a totally different experience. I remember I had enjoyed a complete two months confinement during Ryan’s days. With the CL around the entire two months, I only started taking care of Ryan on the 3rd month and that not even full time as I was still a FTWM then. This time round, my confinement period was shortened to literally only 3 weeks.

It was such astounding experience caring for a baby. I didn’t know they can groan and whimper so much; or maybe after 4 years I have already forgotten how to care for a newborn. It was tough during the initial weeks especially the night feeds. I would wake up at lil b’s every single swish. Sometimes it would be nothing but a fluke shot and he would go back to sleep after a few pats. Other times, his whim signals his desire for a milky fix. It would normally take about an hour or so before I could go back to my sweet dreams. Eventhough he hardly cries, he is sure a loud  groaner. Most of the time once lil b make his gesture middle of the night, I would pick him up, go to the next room, nurse him, burp him, change his diaper and go back to my own room once he asleep. He’s much better now. He no longer groans nor whimpers as much. He also doesn’t pass explosive gas as often as he did during the first month. He’s definitely growing up… *smile*

Chinese New Year

Lil b had  his official first trip outside home (actually he had been to nearby Jusco earlier) on the first day of CNY when we went to Uncle’s place to pai nin. All the relatives gave the same comment and that lil b has an uncanny resemblance of daddy; to which I am not surprised. Just like his kor kor, he definitely has daddy’s eyes; the unmistakable single eyelid, luckily not sepet.

When it comes to lil b’s source of milk, he takes on the combo meal (BM, formula, EBM) and we started training him with the bottle since he was back from hospital. But because this baby is such a boobie baby, giving him the bottle is never a success without a ‘battle’. He would twist and turn his head, wail pitifully until I give in. The same happened on the 2nd day of CNY. We were having dimsum at MO Hotel when lil b needed a fix. Despite all efforts he just turned a blind on the bottle. Such a stubborn boy. I was so disturbed that I didn’t even get to eat their famous durian pancake. At that moment, I just want to get out of there and be home. KL, simply annoyingly baby unfriendly.

@ MO Hotel. He was a week shy from 1 month old. So tiny!!!

Nappy Rash

Ryan had bad nappy rash when he was younger. Little did I expect lil b’s nappy rashes were much more serious than Ryan’s. You could see bloody red patches on his bottom. I read from the book, rashes that appears near the anus are an indication of allergy to protein. I quickly cut down my milk intake (I was taking Anmum Lacta) and his formula (he was on Similac). It was futile. I put him on cloth diaper and clean his bottom with clean water after every diaper change. Again, the efforts showed no remarkable improvement. On the  8th Mac I brought him to Dr Yek. He was prescribed some medication and moisturiser. We also changed his formula from Similac to Isomil. I fed him more formula in the next few days so his poop would be less watery. Combined with the cream, it worked miraculously. His bottom is finally rash free and is silky smooth. :D

cont.. post labour

@ 2 months

Today marked the exact 2 months since lil b arrives into this world. Looking back, the last two months were such whirlwind experience filled with so many unexpected memories of both ups and downs. I swear I had never been through a more stressful and challenging two months in my entire 30 plus years of life.

Where shall I even begin? Mmm….

Lil b was not born perfectly healthy. Shortly after making his appearance on the morning of 22nd Jan, he was wheeled to the observation room for tests and chest X-ray. Reason, lil b had let out an unusual cry caused by possible obstructed airway. In short, he wasn’t breathing properly as a normal newborn should. To me, I couldn’t tell the difference and it didn’t occur to me anything serious would befall on lil b. Maybe because everybody were acting strangely calm throughout the entire procedure.

The midwives made a few more attempts to suction out possible remaining secretion from lil b’s airway, both mouth and nose that may have caused the obstruction. Half way through, lil b’s cries were back to normal. Everybody were sure relieved, including my obgyn who was busy stitching me up. Just when we thought the worst is over, things took another turn. After a few normal cries, lil b was seen gasping for air again. After giving me a short brief and assuring me everything’s in good hands, the midwives were out of my sight in minutes together with my newborn.

I swear I was so heavily sedated from the epidural that I wasn’t sure how to react. I thought I heard one of the midwives said something like ‘phlegm, phlegm..’ earlier so I assumed lil b was nothing more than just being a phlegmy baby.

After lil b was wheeled away, reality began to strike. My mood sunk, and I began to worry. Hubby was with me throughout the whole experience but that doesn’t make the situation any better. Can tell he was in a state of shock himself. Thankfully, the midwives were helpful by providing me updates from time to time.

We stayed in the labour room for the next hour or so while the ward room was being cleaned. It was an agonising wait. I asked hubs to go check out lil b’s progress.

Hubs came back awhile later and brought along some good news. He had met with the paed. While it was not possible to determine the reason for the obstructed airway, the good news is lil b’s airway seemed to have clear miraculously; all without any aid. Miracle? We don’t know.  According to the paed, he was in the midst of preparing the tube (meant for insertion into the mouth to clear the airway) when lil b showed sudden remarkable breathing improvement; with 100% optimum oxygen intake. “maybe he knew if he doesn’t breath properly in the next minute or so, misery was gonna befall on him *smile*”

The X ray results came out the next morning.  There were some possible infections spotted on the lungs and to be on a safe side the paed decided to put lil b was put on a course of antibiotics for 7 days; all that despite lil b showing no sign of illness anymore. I was a little skeptical about the whole antibiotics thing but I guess we just have to trust the experts.

Lil b spent the first 4 days in NICU and remaining 3 days in nursery. On the 3rd day of his life, he developed jaundice (apparently baby with blood group A/B born to blood group O mommy has the tendency to develop severe jaundice. Lil b falls under such category). No risk were taken, he was put under the light.

The cause of infection was unknown but the highest possibility was suspected to be the meconium that lil b may have swallowed at birth (a slightly lower amniotic fluid was detected during my last check up). There were many other possibilities that may cause an infection on newborn and there is no way to be 100% sure. Although I was very curious to find out the root cause, I told the doctors what I cared most then was for them to treat, rather than to dwell on assumptions. It was quite a depressing sight seeing all the healthy babies in nursery and my kesian lil b segegrated in another crib under the UV light with hand bandaged for the IV line (antibiotics). All I wished for was really to bring home my baby soonest possible.

I stayed in the hospital for 2 nights. On the 3rd day, my hectic routine started. I travelled 50km a day to the hospital; to see lil b, to hug him, to talk to him, to cuddle, to nurse and importantly to care and shower him with all the love from home. He may not be able to communicate, but I just know he knew mommy was there to protect him….

On the 7th day, we were finally able to bring lil b home. We went to the hospital early that Friday 29th morning. I was very excited that the night before seemed to crawl. We headed straight to the nursery but lil b was not yet ready. So we went to my obgyn’s office for my checkup and then to the paed’s clinic for final briefing before discharge.

We waited impatiently for the nurses at the nursery to get lil b ready; the discharge package, the forms, the immunisation card etc. At around 12.30pm, lil b was all geared for home sweet home. All forms signed and goodbye waved. My lil b was finally in my arms heading a place we all call HOME.
