How we celebrated Valentine’s Day 2011

Eversince our courting days, we would join the crazy buzz to celebrate Valentine’s Day, 14 Feb 2011. Well, to be honest, hubby is more of a realistic man. He is like many others who deemed the day as just like any other day. So why contribute to the retailers’ pocket right.  Truth to be told, to some certain extent, I too feel the occasion is over blown with too much hype but what the heck. I do like the idea knowing hubs wouldn’t mind spending the time, effort and moolah just to make his wife happy and extra special on this day. Blek.. Spending money is always therapeutic I guess.

Finally…..arrived at Zipangu. We wanted to book for Lafite but they were fully booked since January!!!

Their Valentine’s Day menu… which we didn’t order because we don’t really fancy their selection.

Moet & Chandon to go with our meal. Wanted to order their Macallan 12 but since we have bottles at home, we decided to go for their champagne.

The day is not complete without the perfect pic, right… :D

We took our own sweet time to eat, chit chat while sipping icy cold champagne. We got home at about 11pm and both kids were already asleep. Bliss.

For the record. No, I didn’t manage to get hubs any gift but he did get me a ring which is supposed to be my 6th year Anniversary + Valentine’s gift. :D

Primary School Evaluation

@ 4 years 10 months 1 week 1 day

How time flies. Next week is the start of the one month long Primary 1 registration process for all kids born in 2006 who are due for 2013 P1 intake. That applies to parents who wish to send their kids to International / Private schools, we would still be required to register our child into a public school next month; at which we could withdraw later.

Basically we have ruled out the idea of sending Ryan to a public school. I feel sorry looking at the state of our local public schools these day. Both hubs and I spent at least a decade in public schools and we grew up just fine. Alas, the same standards cannot be said about the public schools today. My nephew spent one disappointed and sad year in one of the ‘supposedly’ top public schools. He’s now switched to a Chinese medium school near my mom’s place and he couldn’t be happier, despite a more hectic school syllabus and of course more homework.

Back to Ryan, for a while we did toy around with the possibility of sending Ryan to Chinese schools such as SJK (C) Yu Hua in Kajang and SJK (C) Jalan Davidson but due to the distant, we dropped the idea. The Chinese schools in our area are out of our consideration.

With so limited choices, we drilled the list down to two private schools. Cempaka vs Sri Suria. We favour the former due to its good track record and of course word of mouth. The only catch is, their school fees! The very first payment amount alone (entry test fee, school fees, deposit, registration, what not) come close to an amount enough for a diploma course. It’s a huge decision ahead and we have a few months to decide if we want to send Ryan in for Reception next year when he’s 6YO (the school teaches Standard 1 at 6YO) or Standard 1 (7YO but school will be teaching Standard two syllabus).

Dilenma….. It’s a huge responsibility here, knowing the decision we make today potentially affect the child’s future.

24Jan11 – Just right in front Festive Hotel (Sentosa). Showing monkey face here just because Darren got into the car first before him. He feels that if he gets into the car first, he will get more play time with Didi because otherwise Mommy who sits in the middle will be blocking between him and Didi. Weirdo boy I have here.

Thank goodness I have a son who cry easily but also quiet down easily. His only request is for mommy to sayang him and the tears will stop.

Chinese New Year 2011

Last year’s Chinese New Year I was still in my month long confinement period. Eventhough I was not die hard, 100% strict by the book confinement follower, there were still many dos and don’ts especially when it comes to food consumption. So this year’s celebration, I went all out. All the new year resolution to bring the weight down goes under the KIV section. I really ate all I can, especially my favourite yee sang. I heart Pik Wah Restaurant’s yee sang. Yummy~

1st day CNY (3rd Feb, Thurs) - Previous years, we would go to one of our uncle’s house at Jalan Ipoh to pai nin. For half a day everyone will go on vegetarian diet. The same has been in practise for many decades. Sadly, this uncle passed away last December due to hypertension. He was a healthy chap and his death was a big shock to everyone. Anyway, putting that sorrow behind us, this year we celebrated 年初一 (first day of Chinese New Year) at this vegetarian restaurant (can’t remeber the name) at Spark Complex Desa Petaling. It’s a place discovered by another Uncle who claimed he has his dinner there 3-4 times a week.

Not everyone were in the pic. Bro in law and family and 2nd auntie and her troops were not present that day. Nevertheless, a good pic!

That night, we went to The Ship, Jalan Sultan Ismail for dinner. This is the second time we had our CNY Day 1 dinner there. The place was as crowded as usual. Parking is a big issue as usual too. Luckily they have valet service.

When we were at The Ship, Ryan had acted strangely. He even refused to drink his usual Lime Juice which he never said no. Strange….

2nd day CNY (4th Feb, Friday) – As usual years, we went for brunch with my mom. For many years we had dim sum at Dragon-i, and for many years we complained about the lack of varieties and the overpriced selection. Yet, we go back year after year. The say, old habit die hard. Maybe that’s true in our gene. Haha.. Anyway, this year, we strive to make a change. We make a reservation a few restaurants away from Dragon-i; the Madam Kwan. At least the food was good.

P1120614
Ryan was acting strangely again. He looked and behaved really tired throughout the session. My poor baby. On the other hand, lil B who started having stranger anxiety kept staring at Por Por. He was pretty alright with my sis, alas I could not say the same with my mom. Aiyooo…

3rd day CNY – (5th Feb, Saturday) – Finally we have an answer to Ryan’s moodiness. He vomitted twice since last night and he claimed to have bad tummyache. Something must have bothering him since days ago and finally the symptoms showed. Unfortunately, his regular paed was still on CNY leave, we brought him to the panel GP in hope we will get a decent doctor. Luck was on our side. A Malay lady doctor examined and found him to nothing serious except for tummy bloatness. So Ryan was prescribed some anti vomitting syrup and medication to reduce tummy wind.  That really spoiled our mood, especially mine. Well, it always does when my kids are sick. So, we stayed in all day.

5 Feb – @ Doctor’s place (Klinik Kita)

4th day CNY (6th Feb, Sunday) – Ryan is so much better this day eventhough he still complain about the discomfort in his tummy. Seeing the medication doing little help with his tummy, I decided to try the magic black oil my mom gave me years ago. Well, she claimed this potion is one money can’t buy. The oil smells bad but my mom said me and my siblings grew up with it. Well, I am still alive and very healthy so no harm trying. I poured a bit of the oil on my palm, rub both hands together to warm up the oil and start rubbing on Ryan’s tummyby stroking downwards. I repeated the process a few times throughout the day. That evening, he felt so much better and was already running around and playing Wii. Seeing him so much better, hubs and I decided we could sneak out for a little light hearted movie. I browsed through TGV and GSC websites and all the seats are taken except for those front few rows seating. No way, I’m gonna stick my head up 1.5 hours for some silly show. So, we opted for GSC Signature tickets and voila, we managed to grab 2 seats for the movie ‘I Love Hong Kong’. Very pleased with my catch of the day indeed. 2nd row from the last. Yay!

5th day CNY (7th Feb, Monday) - We hung around at home doing nothing productive. Ryan was recuperating so we ate that day. We spent our hours playing with the kids, talking nonsense to each other, bickering and simply chil around. That night, we went for another light hearted feel good movie, ‘All’s Well Ends Well 2011′. Again, the in laws helped babysit the kids, the beauty of staying with in laws.

6th day CNY (8th Feb, Tuesday) - Feeling really bored after being cooped up at home for so many days, we brought the boys to release their much compressed energy at Critter Land @ The Heritage. The place is huge, 10,000sqft and we were one of the two families there that day. Ryan had a blast. We brought lil B along and we literally make him practise his walking at the baby section. So cute.

7th day CNY (9th Feb, Wednesday) – School reopens for Ryan. Everybody is back to our boring routine.

10th day CNY (12th Feb, Saturday) – Bro in law is back home with his family. They are relocated to Indonesia and only managed to come back on the 9th. So this day, we had dinner at one of our favourite restaurants, Pik Wah Restaurant.

11th day CNY (13th Feb, Sunday) – Hubs was invited by Genting to the latter’s CNY Luncheon 2011 at Genting Convention Centre. We decided to tag along. So we geared both boys up and off we went to Genting together with MIL.

After the luncheong, we paid RM80 and brought Ryan to the indoor theme park. The park was crazy crowded. We only took 3 rides. Crap!

15th day CNY (17th Feb, Thursday) – Bro in Law and family were here for Chap Goh Mei dinner. That pretty much wrapped up our Chinese New Year.

Updates on my dear Ryan

@ 4 years 10 months 4 days

It has been a while since I update anything on Ryan. Here’s some of his latest developments.

- At this age, he’s very vocal and very expressive (according to his art teacher). At home he has no problem expressing his needs. When he’s outside, I do find him a tad shy especially when it comes to strangers. But after warming up, he’ll be fine. I guess he’s like hubs. Just need a little bit more time to heat it up.

- He is now able to converse in Mandarin. This is an improvement by leaps and bounds. 6 months ago, he had very limited Mandarin vocab, not to mention speaking the language. However after attending BaoBei for a mere 2 months, he started showing progress and the rest is history. As of now, I think he could recognise (read and understand) at least 50 – 80 words now. Not a number to shout about but definitely something I am very proud of him. For sure, he could recognise more Mandarin words than his mommy.

- Ryan is a very competitive child, to an extent overly competitive. He gets very upset when he loses out. When we’re in a game, he want to win all the time. Really bad. I guess that explain why he only plays with Yeh Yeh who always give in to him.

- He’s crazy about Wii and iPad game now. As of now, he’s into Mario Cart (Wii) and Fragger (iPad). Knowing his lack of skills, he always ask Daddy to help him unlock the Mario cars and when it comes to Fragger, he always bug me to unlock the levels for him.

- He has been attending art lessons for about 4 months now. Frankly I don’t see any progress or maybe I do not really know how to evaluate his progress. His art teacher said he’s very expressive in vocal and pictures. He’s also pretty good in his creativity. The only improvement Ryan needs is on his patience. He gets upset even by being the last person to finish his drawing (because everyone else were playing outside except him). Luckily after bring lectured numerous times by me, he’s better now when it comes to that sense. He still get upset if he’s not the first but at least would not put up a show because of silly matter like this.

Feb11 – @ Judy’s Art Class. Theme: CNY flower (that was a Mao Tan flower)

This boy of mine has mood swings. I would say most of the time he is moderately patient. He is one individual who needs to sweet talk to make him do the things we want him to do. The Chinese say , “sao yuen hmm sao ngang”. That’s my boy.

- When he gets punished/scolded/reprimanded, he will say things like “Mommy, you still love me or not?“, “Mommy, I already apologised why you still do bad things to me?“, “Mommy, you want me to eat my food or not? If yes, you must sayang me.“, “Mommy, I want you to sayang me now“, “Mommy, if you don’t sayang me, I don’t love you anymore!” (ouchhh.. how hurtful).

- At this age, he’s very opinionated. He has his own thinking and at times it really drives me up the wall trying to mange this little fella. Just a moment ago, I was scolding him for not eating his food. He was served pasta soup. Instead of eating his Gomito pasta, he was messing around with it and only drank the soup. When I reprimanded him, he kept asking me why; why must he eat lunch when he’s not hungry; why can’t he drink the soup first then only pasta; why he needs to eat food together with everyone (usually only dinner. He eats his lunch in playroom), yadda yadda…..

- Ryan attended his first swimming lesson last Saturday after a very long procrastination by hubs and I. Excuses one after another. So last Saturday what happened was, hubs was commenting he had not visited the club even once after we bought the membership last year and that he’s dying to do some exercise. I suggested we go around 5pm, so we could also meet up with the swim coach, Steven. I knew they have swimming lessons at the Club every weekends between 5 – 7pm. So off we went around 4pm. Coincidentally there was a class which starts at 4.15pm. After discussing with Coach, we decided to let Ryan try. Ryan is one scaredy cat. He dislike water splashing onto his face. I get very agigated during shower time when I have to wash his hair with his head backwards. Yea.. at almost 5 years old, he still get his hair washed that way. So ‘baby‘ rite. LOL. Anyway, back to his first swimming lesson, he got on very well. He was a bit intidimated when he was asked to remove his floats and put on the goggles but he survived. :P I guess it was due to the peer pressures. We bumped into his schoolmate who is also attending swimming lesson under Steven and guess what this friend could swim like a mermaid! Knowing Ryan’s personality, he will bite his tongue and prove he too can do it, if not better.

19Feb11 - First swimming lesson. Was asked to breath bubbles and kick water. Noticed how he was trying very hard to put up a smile there. :D

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DARREN,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU…

My Lil B turned 1 year old on the 22 January. Exactly a year ago, my baby decided he’s ready to meet the world when my I started to feel the tiny weeny contractions pain coming in the middle of my sleep around 2.30am. Since the pain wasn’t really regular, as yet, I brushed it off, assuming it was another false alarm. Afterall, I have been scheduled to go in at 5.30am for induction. I tried to get some sleep before the big day ahead. After tossing for an hour or so, unable to sleep, I went to the washroom only to be greeted with patches of blood. That’s it! My baby was getting impatient and wanted out. So I gathered myself, brushed my teeth, clean up my face, so forth and woke hubby up. He was still in daze being suddenly awaken from his slumberland. There goes, we zoomed to the hospital and the rest were history. Darren came back from the hospital 7 days later to HOME SWEET HOME. My baby, had gone through so much.

Today, he’s a bubbly 1 year old with a cheeky mind. He dotes on his kor kor and will instantly be brightened up when kor kor is around.

We celebrated lil B’s birthday a little earlier because we had planned to bring lil B to Singapore on his actual birthdate. It was a private occasion wit just family members. On the 16th January (Sunday), we collected his pre ordered cake from Secret Receipe Sg Long. Ryan had chose the cake for lil B. It’s a cute yellow bee cake. If only the taste is as good as its look.

P1120259

P1120262

Ryan insisted to cut the cake on behalf of Didi.

@ 1 year old +, he could take many little steps. He could walk easily 10 – 15 steps without support. It’s pretty scary to see how he walks. Not knowing anything about danger, he could walk really fast. It’s really scary I could have a heart attack.

Weight: 11.40kg, HC: 49cm, Length: 80cm

Some other milestones:

- He could wave bye bye

- He could express what he want by pointing and screaming vocalling his needs

- He is one loud baby. His screams could be heard a few blocks away. No joke.

- He started to have stranger anxiety when he was about 11 months I think. He refused to be carried by anyone except us (luckily not just me). Somehow he doesn’t like to be carried by Loida. It does send me shivers imagining things whether she has been abusing my baby hence the dislike of her. But then again, I am a stay at home mom and so far I am not seeing anything that weigh on my suspicious. I guess a CCTV inside the house is inevitable now.

- He’s starting to be more picky on his food. He loves adult food. I must admit, I am less strict on his diet as compared to Ryan’s at the same age. They said 2nd time mom is more ‘relaxed’. I guess that’s true to a certain extent.

- His sleeping pattern is good. He normally wakes up around 7am which is the time Ryan wakes up for school too. He will take his nap around 10am for about an hour – an hour and half. His next nap would be around 2.30pm for another 1 – 1.5 hours. Two naps a day. I try not to let him nap past 5pm. So far the schedule works fine and he’ll be in bed around 9pm, latest 10pm. This is so much better than the early days when this little pumpkin will only sleep way past midnight. Those days were torturous.

- He’s very scared of the doctor. I brought him in for MMR jab last week (11Feb) and the moment I put him on the scale for weighing, he started wailing. He stopped crying the moment I picked him up. Then when we were called in, he started his antics again the minute he saw doctor’s face. What a drama king. LOL. When we came out of doctor’s room, everybody were looking at us. I’m so sure even the neighbour office could hear his screaming and cries.

- Some of the words he utters which sounded like : mum mum (eat), yeh yeh, mama,

- On normal days, Darren eats cereal for breakfast. For lunch, he eats what Ryan eats so it can be noodles, pasta, rice. For dinner, he’ll have his regular porridge with pureed chicken, vege, etc. He absolutely loves soup. Any kind of soup goes with him.
