Ultraman Mini Exhibition

@ 4 years 6 months 4 days

Ryan fell ill on the 14th Oct (Thursday) with a fever. His fever was very high that night, 39.xC and when his temp did not subside after sponging him and Neurofen, I had no choice but to administer suppository at around 10pm. He cried and said it was painful. My poor boy. Luckily at this age, he’s more understanding and he knows it’s something we had to do to make him feel better. I consoled him saying if he gets better, I’ll bring him to The Mines for Ultraman mini exhibition.

On Friday, his fever kinda went away after another dose of Neurofen.  He kept checking on the time and asked me to get ready. He was really looking forward to the session. He’s been a fan since he was 2. So I brought him to The Mines as promised to see his superhero.

It was a 3 day event. Friday was media and VIP launch. No, we were not the VIP so that was as close as we could get to the stage. The boy in pic was a TV presenter. Lucky him. We could join the meet and greet session on Sat/Sun for some pictures but I decided not to tell Ryan about it anticipating the Q will be mad

Checking out the goodies to add to his gigantic collection

I had to tell him all the Monsters’ name on each of the poster. He could name and remember all the Ultraman in and out of his collection

Lil B unwell

@ 8 months 3 weeks 6 days

Lil b is turning 9 months in a few days’ time. He has grown so much in the last few months. Despite being sleep deprived, the journey with him around has truly made me a better mom, a more patience soul.

Today, lil b is under the weather. He’s developed a fever. I caught him tossing around the bed at 5am. His forehead felt a bit hot so I dashed for the thermometer. True enough, the reading showed 37.9C. I suspect he caught the flu big from Ryan who was down with a fever too last Friday (surprisingly he recovered after a day). As I type, lil b’ temp is within control ; max 38C. I fed him 2.5ml of paracetamol for him to sleep better during his nap later while I am out fetching Ryan from his Mandarin class. I hope he gets well soon. I hate it when the kids are sick, regardless the claim how it helps build up their immune!

Lil B was scratched by some unknown object yesterday. By the time we noticed, the red scratch was already evident. Luckily by today, the scratch has faded.

For the last 3 weeks or so, Ryan had been complaining about breathing difficulty. The strangest part was this only happens in the wee hour around 5 – 6am. It’s hard to tell whether or not he was exaggerating the condition due to some allergies, blocked nose,  or he was truly showing signs of asthmatic because all that’s needed was a few drops of saline and voila, he’ll be back into dreamland. Prob is hubs had the exact same symptoms when he was little so it could be genetic.  He too complained of breathing difficulty then (hubs insists his case was a very mild one and he hardly needed the inhaler). Anyway, thanks to his paed’s advise, hubs got himself into swimming and that helped him ditched his inhaler for good.

Due to hubs’ past history, Ryan’s complain certainly cannot be taken lightly. We will continue to monitor Ryan and he’s going for some real swimming lessons once we identify a suitable instructor for him. Paed advised us to give him Aureus to help with the allergy and if all still fail, he may need the inhaler.

For the last one week, he stopped making these ‘wake up calls’. Let’s hope that is the start to the end of the problem.

H1N1 Scare

@ 39 months 2 weeks 5 days

Ryan would normally share with me what happened in his class during the day. Last Thursday, while on our way home in the car he told me stories about his friend (he meant his classmate) had to wear a mask as he was coughing and having runny nose. Ryan actually thought the mask part was really funny so when we got home he insisted I give him one to wear. DUH.

On a separate note, despite finding Ryan’s story entertaining, I was not pleased by the teachers’ actions; as we were told the school takes strict policies to isolate a sick child in a sick bay until his parents come to pick him up. Call me kiasu but with the current H1N1 cases spiking every day, this is no joke. Obviously we do not want to expose our child to any possibility that affects their immune system.

I asked the teacher the next day. She assured me the child was just having dry cough and they had taken precaution to isolate him from other classmates in class yesterday. I wasn’t pleased for sure but I did not pursue the matter further, although, frankly logically thinking, you know germs are airborne, in situation whereby the class is air conditioned does make the matter worse. Isolation within the class, huh?? .. is not good enough.

Anyway, I let the matter rest while hoping Ryan did not catch anything nasty knowing how ‘keh poh chee’ he is, he’ll sure go and disturb his mask wearing friend. His busybodiness can really go to the extreme, for eg. one time he told me his friend peed in the class, while the cleaning auntie was mopping the floor this little rascal of mine went and stepped on it. I asked him why he stepped on it, he said  ’EEEWWW… HIS PEE SO DISGUSTING. I WANT TO SEE‘. What a silly boy right. Yikes, stepped on pee! Goodness. Anyway, on Friday evening, Ryan came back with a mild flu. It came and gone and by evening he was showing no further symptoms.

Saturday came and gone too. All seemed good.

On Sunday, his runny nose came back in the morning. His body temperature was slightly higher 37.7C. I gave him some medications before he had his usual nap around 1pm. I was quite worried. I would not have been so given the normal circumstances but it is the swine flu season now and we were urged to seek medical assistance within 24 – 48 hours to allow a full recovery. The H1N1 case reported in Ryan’s school a week earlier did not help. The whole classroom was ordered shut by MOE. Teachers, students even the bus driver and those in the same bus who had contact with the child were quarantined for 7 days.

Came Monday morning, Ryan was still having runny nose but no other flu symptoms. Nevertheless I brought him to the paed. After some examinations, doc suspect he could be down with just the seasonal flu. But I am not contented. I insisted a swine flu test to be sure. Yes, super kiasu here but as a parent who wouldn’t right. Afterall, I am in a high risk category now thus having two sick cats at home is certainly something we all dreaded.

So after $60 and 15 mins agonizing wait, the results came out negative. It was a false alarm afterall. Phew phew… Total damage to the pocket $140 incl consultations and medications (cough and runny nose). Expensive, expensive but you know what, the sigh of relief is really PRICELESS.

Love that smirk on his face. Ryan had wanted to get a gun for the longest time. I really hesitated… but one day while shopping he saw this M16 gun and showed me his ‘muka sepuluh sen’. I gave in this time. He was evidently estatic. As if we don’t have enough intruders on our bed, that night he insisted to sleep with his gun by the side.

A few days later, he came home from school and told me this ‘Mom, Ben and I are the bad guys’. I went ‘huh’ and ‘why’??. His reply.. “Because we both have guns’. Pengsan. LOL.

The last 2 weeks…

@ 35 months 4 weeks

On 30th Mac, both mommy and son were feeling a little unwell, down with runny nose. Nevertheless we went ahead for dinner to celebrate the occassion. Afterall, Ryan was not showing any signs of being unwell throughout the day. His runny nose was somehow intermittent. So after picking hubs from work, we went to Jerry’s BBQ and Grill at Club St. The restaurant is famous for their hickory smoked barbecue ribs. Despite warnings from hubs I should eat something less heaty for fear of throat inflammation, I went ahead and ordered half slab of their specialty pork ribs. There were not many guests in the restaurant so the wait was bearable. After 15 minutes, the food came. Having tried the baby back ribs at Tony Romas and this at Jerry’s. I must say the latter come highly commended, at least from me. If you come to Singapore and do not like the mad Q at Tony Romas, this is worth a try.

The leftovers.. which really weren’t any….that just shows how yummy the food was

The last 2 weeks was horrible. Ryan was down with cold illness one after another. After $159 spent, a week’s medication, 4 days absence from school, Ryan is fully recovered from his symptoms. This is the first time he had fallen ill this year. He had actually recovered from his runny nose 3 days into Polaramine. I made a mistake of sending him to school on the 4th day – though partly on his request. On the 5th day, he was down with runny nose again, believed caught from school.

The Do-Re-Me-Fa-So medication that Ryan has to take 2 -3 times a day. One more milestone to note. Ryan no longer fusses during medicine time. That makes the whole process of feeding medicine so much more at ease. At some point he even looked forward to them. All he needed were just a syringe and water to play with. I cannot be more pleased. My boy has grown up… :D
